Summer fling
The lineup for tomorrow’s annual JAM’N-94.5 Summer Jam at the Tweeter Center in Mansfield features Ray J, Rick Ross, Trey Songz, the Dream, Lloyd and some other artists who, to be blunt, may not be remembered next year at this time.
Take a look back at the past four years of Summer Jam. It’s clear that certain suckers sink, while musical sluggers graduate from opening shows to headlining tours.
SUMMER JAM SLUGGERS
Lloyd (Summer Jam ’04)
New Orleans song boy Lloyd knows how to stay on top, which is why he’s back as one of the main attractions at tomorrow’s Summer Jam. In addition to releasing two solo albums in the past two years, he’s also kept himself in the spotlight by blessing tracks for an unprecedented number of rappers, from Yung Berg and Chamillionaire to Ludacris and Young Jeezy. He must be trading notes with his hometown buddy and fellow cameo king Lil’ Wayne; reportedly the two will drop a full-length collabo CD soon.
Ray J (Summer Jam ’06)
Ray J may not be able to keep milking being Brandy’s brother, but he’s come back with the summer’s tightest bubble-gum hit so far. Five years from now “Sexy Can I” might be as memorable as Ray J’s sex tape with Hollywood do-nothing/reality TV star Kim Kardashian, but right now he has dance floors thumping. No wonder he’s back at the Tweeter tomorrow.
Kanye West (Summer Jam ’04)
As needless as it is to prop Kanye West any further, his might be the wildest of all Summer Jam success stories. When West appeared at the 2004 concert, his “College Dropout” debut had just dropped, yet the popularity of his “Through the Wire” single was already enough to put him at the top of the bill. The rest, as he would say, is history.
SUMMER JAM SUCKERS
Brooke Valentine (Summer Jam ’05)
If you remember Brooke Valentine, it’s probably because of her thick lips and flawless midriff, not her 2004 semi-smash, “Girlfight.” The Houston native is still making records, but promoters who package summer lineups no longer want her. Which makes sense: Why have one girl sing generic booty shakers when you can get four for the price of one with Cherish, the Atlanta quartet performing tomorrow?
Ja Rule (Summer Jam ’04)
In the summer of 2002, you couldn’t listen to rap radio for more than five minutes without hearing Ja Rule in a corny love exchange with the hottest r & b girl of the moment. But when 50 Cent dented his reputation, and fans got sick of Ja romancing one minute and acting tough the next, they dumped him for new roughneck pretty boys like Plies and Flo Rida. Simply put, Ja no longer rules.

Shoot first, buy music later in GTA IV
Press 'buy'It's been well established how TV shows, ads and videogames are growing areas of music discovery and promotion. But until GTA IV, there's been no construct that allows for the immediate identification and purchase of those songs from videogames. GTA IV has added that 'buy' button, and record labels welcome the innovation."It's a very big deal for us," says Cynthia Sexton, senior vice president of marketing and licensing for EMI Music North America. "We're continually looking for new ways to sell our music. There are millions of people buying 'Grand Theft Auto', and we hope they will enjoy the music and in turn buy those tracks."With this in mind, the music industry could have no better ally than Rockstar. The outfit is one of the few game developers that actually creates and licenses its own soundtracks - a task often left to the game publisher - and the company approaches it with a passion close to music-geek-like obsession.Consider the back story on how the 1979 cult classic Walk the Night by the Skatt Bros. came to appear on the soundtrack. Skatt Bros. member Sean Delaney - also known as the "fifth member of Kiss" for his writing and production work with the rock band - died in 2003, leaving his publishing share to a brother, a sister and a nephew living somewhere in Utah. They proved so hard to find that Rockstar went through the trouble of hiring a private investigator who flew to Orum, Utah, to locate them.

Locking horns somewhere between the worlds of Southern gunk and art metal (well, Arkansas-style anyhow), the band known as Rwake formed in Little Rock round 1997, recording their first-class honours degree demonstration the following class, and self-releasing a arcsecond, entitled Absence Due to Projection, in 1999. Another trey long time passed before the arrival of Rwake's first gear proper record album, The pits Is a Door to the Sun, and another long-player, If You Walk Before You Crawl, You Crawl Before You Die, was completed for dismissal through and through At a Loss Records in 2004. At this juncture, the group's batting order consisted of Chris Terry (vocals), Gravy (guitar), Kiffen (guitar), Reid (sea bass), Jeff (drums), and B. (Moog/vocals/samples).

Ham Sandwich - Carry the Meek
Freed from the constraints of cool moniker syndrome and worrying whether it fits the sound, Kells quintet Ham Sandwich turn in as assured and alluring a debut as you'll get between now and the turkey.
Two singers, the right mix of poignancy and darkness in its break-up narrative and some well-timed instrument punishment give 'Carry the Meek' a primitive power which few can summon well - the line "I think I got my hearing back" is very apt, but there's a lot done to your heart too.
And, like the most dysfunctional of couplings, you'll keep coming back. Some will find the name unforgivable, but some of the music is unforgettable.

Jessica Alba - Alba Planning Second Wedding
LATEST: JESSICA ALBA's brother has hinted the newlywed actress is planning a second wedding ceremony later this year (08) to celebrate her nuptials with family and friends.
The pregnant star wed her longtime beau Cash Warren in a low-key ceremony at Beverly Hills Courthouse on Monday (19May08) - just 40 minutes after applying for a marriage licence.
The couple were reportedly so desperate to keep the nuptials private, they didn't invite any guests - even their immediate family.
Alba's brother Josh was only alerted to the news by America's Us Weekly magazine, and he couldn't believe it.
He exclaimed: "My sister!? I'm going to have to call her!"
Even the Fantastic Four star's father, Mark Alba, was unaware of the quick ceremony - but he insists he is happy for his newlywed daughter.
He tells Latina magazine, "I think it's good news for her. I'm glad for her. She's a beautiful girl. I'm her dad and I'm happy for her no matter what happens."
However, Josh later explained to E! News that he was only surprised at the secret wedding because he knows "they are going to do a big ceremony later".
He added, "I just don't know any of the details yet."
The couple announced their engagement in December (07), shortly after Alba revealed she was pregnant.

Recording both as a solo creative person and in coaction with Gershon Kingsley, Jean-Jacques Perrey helped popularise electronic euphony with a series of albums in the 1960s that exploited Moog synthesizers, the ondioline, and magnetic tape. His act was never intended to be part of the new wave, as Perrey himself cheerfully declared in his ocean liner notes. His goal was to popularize electronic euphony by deploying it in happy, dim-witted tunes and arrangements. That's wherefore his music falls far closer to easy listening/space age pop than whatever sort of cutting edge -- and that is too why his music sounds more than cheesily nostalgic than futuristic these days.
In the early '50s, Perrey became transfixed by the ondioline, a keyboard instrument that hoped-for the synthesizer with its emulation of other instruments. He dropped out of aesculapian schoolhouse to get a gross revenue representative for the ondioline, and by the early '60s he'd moved to the U.S. to act in goggle box, wireless, and the transcription studio. His '60s albums for Vanguard, both as a solo do and half of Perrey-Kingsley, were his most widely circulated, giving Perrey a prospect to demonstrate his armoury of electronic instruments, treatments, and tape manipulations. The actual results were spirited and childish, perchance betraying more than of Perrey's considerable background in radio/TV jingles than crataegus oxycantha have been intended. Treated more as novelties than innovations, they came back into vogue when Perrey was profiled in RE/SEARCH's Incredibly Strange Music book in the nineties. Perrey returned to France in 1970, where he continued to work in wireless, TV, soundtracks, and former melodic projects. By the '90s he had begun recording once more, first base in a coaction with French electronica couple Air, then with an album of his possess, Eclektronics.
